Verse 27-36
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men (9:27-31)
This miracle is seen only in Matthew; other incidences of healing the blind can be seen in Matthew 12:22 (Demoniac blind and mute); 20:30 (Blind beggar in Jericho who cried out ‘Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!’; John 9:1(Anointed the blind man’s eyes with the mud and asked him to ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam’)
Verse 27-30: “As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, ‘Have mercy on us, Son of David!’
And when he had entered a house, those blind men approached him, and he asked them, ‘Do you believe that I am able to do this?’
“‘Yes, Lord,’ they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, ‘According to your faith will it be done to you’; and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, ‘See that no one knows about this.’”
"’Son of David, have mercy on us!’"
Every Jew knew that the Messiah that they were expecting will be the son of David. Just like it, these blind people might have heard about it. They also knew Lord was a miracle worker, but Lord did not answer them on the way.
“When he had entered a house”
This was Apostle Peter’s home. There is a reason for the Lord asking them about their faith. So far, all the healing was done to the people who already believed in the Lord. Here our Lord was testing their faith by asking, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
And they were healed according their faith. So three things are obvious today: 1) test of the faith by Lord 2) submission to the faith 3) Lord’s words and touch healed them. Even today these three things are necessary for the blessing of the Lord.
Again here also Lord is warning them not to tell anyone. Lord’s refusal for fame or self praise is a guideline for us in our life. Due to the sincere thanks and love for the grace they received from Lord, they didn’t want to keep it as a secret.
Verse 33: “And when the demon had gone out, the dumb man conversed. And the multitudes admired, and said: ‘Never was it so seen in Israel!’”
Again , one more incident which shows that Lord will change the person who submits to Him. The ordinary people were amazed and rejoiced.
Verse 34: “But the Pharisees said, "’It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.’"
The hostile could not see goodness. The Pharisees and Scribes saw the healing of the sick and raising of the dead, but they spread rumors that it was don with the help of the “Prince of demons”. Thus, they tried cheating themselves and the public. Though they were learned and were expecting the Messiah, they never thought that this could be the Messiah they were expecting.
Verse 35: “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.”
1. Lord’s work was at all places, irrespective of town or village
2. He taught in Synagogues
3. He preached about the good news of the kingdom
4. He healed all diseases and pains of the people.
These four should be the duties of a Gospel preacher.
Verse 36: “And when Jesus looked on the multitudes, he pitied them; because they were wearied and dispersed, like sheep that have no shepherd”
The people should not be blamed for the distress because they are “sheep”, and they needed a good shepherd to lead them. They had a High Priest, the Pharisees, etc. as shepherds, but they too were in distressed state; “the blind lead by blind”. The shepherds should be even willing to sacrifice their life for the sheep, and should not work for just salary alone (John). He should be able to “take care of my sheep” for Lord (John 21). The shepherd should lead the sheep to “green pastures, and beside quiet waters”. The great group of people once lead by Moses, Aaron, Joshua , and Samuel are now lead by people without vision and who did not know the meaning of the Call of the Lord. Whenever the leaders of the church start administering instead of serving then the people will be “distressed” and “dispersed” anytime and anywhere.
