Verse 24-28 The wise man and fool
Verse 7:24- 27: “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."
The wise man and fool :
There are some areas in Palestine and other parts of the world where land is not hard enough to build a foundation. If anyone builds a home on soft land, their home will be washed away in rain and flood. The house built on good foundation will withstand any negative circumstances.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine” AND does them: That is, one who obeys our Lord will stand firm always. People who only ‘hears’ these sayings will be like the one our Lord said in the parable; they will be a looser and will be destroyable. One who stand firm like Job, apostles, and numerous martyrs are like the ones who build their house on firm ground.
Verse 7:28 : “multitudes were astonished” because:
1. He taught like an authority. He said “ I say to you …”, and showed He is the authority.
2. The Pharisees and scribes were just repeating the man made laws. But our Lord revealed the laws of God, the Law Maker, in a manner that people could obey them.
3. Many enemies of our Lord asked many question to test the meaning of His parables, but He answered them brilliantly and this surprised the multitudes. This can be seen in later sections, too.
